Finding the Space a Family Needs in the House They Already Have
The family needed a dining room, an extra bedroom, a large open-plan kitchen and an ensuite. The design finds most of that space in the garage and the roof, and adds the rest with a two-storey extension at the front.
The project so far
The Problem
The house no longer had the rooms the family needed.
There was no proper dining room and no spare bedroom. The kitchen was not the large, open-plan space they wanted at the centre of the home. And upstairs there was no ensuite, with a landing that felt tight.
What We Are Designing
We are designing three changes that work together.
A two-storey extension at the front adds a dining room downstairs and an extra bedroom above it. The garage is converted into a large open-plan kitchen. And two new dormers in the roof create an ensuite and a larger landing.
A new porch and a window in place of the garage door give the front of the house a more welcoming face.
How It Will Change the Way They Live
The family will have a large open-plan kitchen to cook and gather in, and a dining room with space for everyone to sit down together.
Upstairs, the extra bedroom, the new ensuite and a more generous landing will give the house the room it has been missing.
How we got there
The conversation
The family wanted more from their home: a proper dining room, an extra bedroom, a large open-plan kitchen, and an ensuite.
Rather than start with a type of extension, we started with the house as it stands — what it already has, and where the space they need could come from.
Finding the space
Much of what the family needed was already inside the house, waiting to be used differently.
The garage could become the large open-plan kitchen without extending at all. The roof space could take two dormers, giving room for an ensuite and a larger landing. That left only the dining room and the extra bedroom to be found — and a two-storey extension at the front provides both, one above the other.
The design
The two-storey front extension adds a dining room on the ground floor and an extra bedroom above it.
The garage is converted into a large open-plan kitchen, with its door replaced by a window. A new gabled porch gives the front door a proper entrance, and two dormers in the front roof create the ensuite and a larger landing.
Seeing it before it is built
Concept 3D visuals let the family see the finished house — inside and out — while the design can still change easily on screen rather than on site.
They show how the new front will look from the driveway, and how the kitchen and dining room will feel to live in.
