Bringing the Kitchen to the Back of the House and Out onto the Garden
A new single-storey rear extension gives this Higher Bebington family home a light-filled kitchen and dining space that opens straight onto a new patio.
The project so far
The Problem
The house has generous rooms at the front, but the back of the house does little with the garden behind it.
The family wanted a kitchen and dining space at the back of the home that would work for everyday life and open out onto the garden.
What We Are Designing
A single-storey rear extension with a hipped roof, holding a new kitchen planned around a long island, under a vaulted ceiling with rooflights.
A new dining area links the kitchen to the hallway, and a utility, WC and bathroom sit alongside. Wide bifold doors open the kitchen onto a new patio.
How It Will Change the Way They Live
Cooking and eating will come together in one bright space at the back of the house, with the garden just through the doors.
The practical rooms — utility, WC and bathroom — are kept to one side, so the new kitchen and dining space can stay the centre of family life.
How we got there
The house today
A large, characterful family home with generous rooms at the front — dining room, playroom and lounge — but a rear that does little to connect the house with its garden.
The starting point was a survey of the existing house, so the new space could be designed around how the rooms already work.
The design
A single-storey rear extension holds a new kitchen, planned around a long island with a sink, with bifold doors opening onto a new patio.
Between the kitchen and the hallway, a new dining area links the extension to the rest of the house, so cooking and eating sit together at the back of the home. A utility, WC and bathroom are planned alongside, keeping the practical rooms out of the main living space.
Seeing it before it is built
Sketches and concept 3D visuals show the family how the new space will look and feel before anything is built, while changes are still easy to make.
Inside, the hipped roof is opened up into a vaulted ceiling with rooflights, bringing daylight down over the island. Outside, the extension sits low beside the original house, with wide bifold doors onto the patio.
