A Side Extension That Makes the Whole Ground Floor Work Harder
A single-storey side extension gives this Spital family home a home office, a utility and WC, and a new kitchen at the back of the house that opens onto the garden.
The project so far
The Problem
A characterful detached house, but one whose ground floor did not give the family everything they needed: no home office, no utility or downstairs WC, and a kitchen that did not open onto the garden.
What We Are Designing
A single-storey extension along the side of the house. At the front, it creates a home office. Further back, a utility and WC sit off the hallway, out of the way of the main living space.
At the back of the house, a new kitchen is planned around an island under a large rooflight, with French doors onto the garden. The lounge opens through to it, so the kitchen and living space connect.
How It Will Change the Way They Live
The family will have somewhere to work at the front of the house, the practical rooms they were missing, and a bright kitchen at the back that flows into the lounge and out to the garden.
How we got there
The design
The extension runs down the side of the house: a home office at the front, then the utility and WC off the hallway, leading through to the new kitchen at the back.
From the street, it sits low beside the original house, under a pitched roof, with a new front window and an octagonal window to match the character of the house.
Seeing it before it is built
Concept visuals show the family how the new kitchen will feel, with daylight from the rooflight over the island, and how it opens from the lounge and out to the garden.
