Reworking a Heswall Bungalow from the Ground Floor to the Roof

Demolition, a reconfigured ground floor and a dormer loft conversion turn a three-bedroom bungalow of separate rooms into an open-plan home with a master suite in the roof.

The project so far

The Problem

The bungalow had space, but not in the right places. The kitchen, office and lounge were separate rooms off the hall, and the loft above sat empty.

What Is Being Designed

SDA Architecture has designed the redevelopment: demolition, a reconfiguration of the ground floor and a dormer conversion of the loft.

Downstairs, the kitchen and office become one open-plan kitchen and dining room, with a boot room and a utility and pantry alongside. A new staircase leads up to a master bedroom with an ensuite in the roof, lit by a rear dormer and a glazed gable.

How It Will Change the Way They Live

Cooking and eating will come together in one open space, with the practical rooms kept to the side.

And the loft, unused until now, becomes a master suite of its own.

How we got there

01

The bungalow today

A three-bedroom bungalow, with the kitchen, office and lounge in separate rooms off the hall and an empty loft above.

The house has plenty of space; the layout just does not let the family use it well.

The design

The redevelopment has been designed by SDA Architecture. It combines demolition, a reconfiguration of the ground floor and a dormer conversion of the loft.

Downstairs, the kitchen and office become one open-plan kitchen and dining room, with a boot room and a utility and pantry alongside. A new staircase rises from the hall.

Upstairs, the loft becomes a master bedroom with its own ensuite and eaves storage, lit by a new rear dormer and a glazed gable.

03

Making room in the roof

To give the new loft rooms proper head height without raising the roof, the existing loft floor is taken out and rebuilt at a lower level.

The roof is upgraded at the same time, with insulation added above the existing structure. That keeps the ridge at a similar height while bringing the roof up to current energy-efficiency standards.

The proposed section: the loft floor lowered beneath the new master bedroom and ensuite.
